It was the sharp and sporty little car that most people could afford. A thing of beauty expressing the American spirit of freedom, a breath of fresh air in a market inundated with supposedly sophisticated (read: stuffy) foreign cars. The Ford Mustang burst onto the scene in 1964 and in spite of several updates has never wavered in popularity.
Of course, you could not blame savvy Europeans for attempting to fill and obvious niche. Other '64 American model cars hardly inspired.
To paraphrase a line from MST3K's parody of the movie
Mitchell, the latter is a car that thinks it's a house. The former is a pathetic little tin can on wheels. Who wouldn't want this?
