Machismo, in the best possible sense, is the essential quality of a man and it is precisely the characteristic being sacrificed by the modern male. One of the reasons "rat pack" movies (and related nostalgia) has become so popular is because it offers vicarious experiences for modern men who can only dream but never live or even acknowledge a desire to live that way, a chance to be a guy, a sophisticated guy, who enjoys fast cars, fast planes, beautiful women and the company of contemporaries.
Confidence bordering on cockiness is sexy but you have to be able to back it up. It is insufficient to merely talk a good game. The elegant and sophisticated man quietly asserts his dominance. Swagger is reserved for very limited and specific occasions.
Hip (or hep for purists) is a state of being that begins as a state of mind. It is so foreign and rare today because it has been selectively socialized out of the modern male. He has been taught to fear and deny his natural inclinations, feign appreciation for the alternative, and also adopt a sensitive New Age guy persona as a strategy for copulation, but why? Why not listen to your guy? Be a guy, a guy with class who knows how to treat a lady, have a good time, and move through the world with style and grace.
